A common human habit is that, when we are feeling anger at someone, we don’t only react to what’s happening now in the moment, we react to a whole mental file folder of other, related things the person has done, and things they may do again, and all the thoughts we are having about the whole situation. It’s like we open up the whole situational anger file folder and then we unload all of the anger on them. And the intensity of our anger doesn’t match the intensity of the situation and the other person can feel hurt, confused, and angry about this unfair mismatch. Mindfulness is about being aware of the extra ammunition we recruit in times of anger, and being able to set it aside before we respond. This meditation will introduce a strategy you can use to help you to pause and notice the stories you are telling about what is happening in the moment.
